The management of gum disease is determined by the stage of the disease, but generally involves cleaning and disinfecting the soft tissues surrounding the teeth. A surgical procedure may be necessary if a patient has gum disease in the advanced stages. Periodontal disease has been implicated as an important risk factor in major systemic problems including heart disease and strokes. It is important to ensure the prevention of advanced and chronic gum disease.
